First Look: Chicco Together Tandem Stroller

When I told my staff that Chicco is sending us a sample of their new tandem stroller they were all smiles and excited. Yes, some of us are “baby” gear heads here at Goore’s. I have been hounding Chicco for a couple years to create a tandem stroller that accepts the Chicco KeyFit infant car seat – the hottest selling infant car seat right now. Like the KeyFit, it took them a while to get it to market but it also appears it was worth the wait. See photos below this post.

After in depth inspection, my staff and I all rate the Chicco Together very high. The real test though will be with daily use in the real world with kids and all the stuff that comes along with them. Our sample is headed out today for an extended real life test with a local family. Like Road & Track does with new cars, I will be providing you updates on their experience, likes and dislikes of this stroller.

The Chicco Together is has a recommended use from birth to 36 month and can hold up to 40 lbs. in each seat. At an estimated retail of $299, the Together packs a lot of features into a relatively compact unit.

  • Accepts two KeyFit/KeyFit 30 infant car seats. The front seat folds forward to accommodate the car seat without a front bar or tray. This is also why the Together is smaller than most other tandems.
  • Anodized aluminum frame with unique elliptical tubing. Results in a weight of only 30 lbs.
  • One-hand fold. Like the Cortina Stroller folding mechanism. Auto latches and is free standing.
  • All wheel suspension for a smooth ride
  • One Touch linked rear brakes.
  • Spacious shopping basket. Holds all your stuff when out with two kids. Zipper accessible basket when rear seat is reclined
  • Removable child’s arm bar and removable/reversible cupholders that face in or out for the front seat
  • Independent adjustable canopies with mesh windows
  • 3 position height-adjustable handle that folds down when storing.
  • Parent’s tray with 2 cupholders and enclosed storage compartment.
Like all Chicco baby gear products this stroller has nice Italian designed tailoring. We are still waiting to hear what the final patterns will be but it appears they will roll it out in at least 2 – Fuego and Romantic. The estimated availability at this time is late March / early April. I wouldn’t expect it until April but you never know. We have taken all the measurements and will follow up this post with another that compares the Chicco Together to other tandem strollers on the market.

Massive Crib Recall From Stork Craft - An Industry Insider Perspective

Infant Entrapment and Suffocation Prompts Stork Craft to Recall More Than 2.1 Million Drop-Side Cribs

In case you didn’t hear about it on Monday, November 23rd, numerous local and national media outlets announced a pending crib recall in the coming days that was going to be very large. There were no specifics on who and how many, but it did involve an entrapment issue. Speculation was rampant and, like the kids game of telephone, estimates went from 500,000 to 5 million to all drop side cribs ever made. For this reason Goore’s waited to hear what company, or companies, are affected by the recall, how many cribs are involved and what the course of action was to fix them. Goore's went ahead and pulled all drop side cribs from our floor and from our outlet as a precautionary measure pending the official release or concrete information to work from.

It turns out that it is only one company, Stork Craft Manufacturing and it was not 5 million cribs. This does not in any way discount the importance and magnitude of this recall. As a side note, Goore's has never sold Stork Craft cribs but is deeply concerned about this issue.

First and foremost, parents should always follow instructions when assembling or reassembling a crib. Cribs should always be used properly in order to provide the safest sleeping environment for your child. “The safest place for a child is in a fully functional, properly assembled crib. Parents are urged to closely inspect the hardware and stability of their cribs to ensure all parts are in place and secure when assembling and re-assembling cribs.” according to Mike Dwyer, JPMA Executive Director. More on JPMA's response to safety concerns below.

This recall involves Stork Craft drop-side cribs and Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. This recall does not involve any cribs that do not have a drop-side or any cribs with metal rod drop-side hardware. It involves only those cribs with plastic trigger and one-hand-system drop-side hardware.

The issues are partially due to faulty manufacturing most likely driven by the mass merchant’s downward pressure on manufacturers to produce products cheaper. The manufacturers most likely are not cheapening their products at the expense of safety but the pressure is there. If vendors are not vigilant in their oversight of their factories, the factories themselves may be to blame. As a consumer and even us as a retailer, we will never know the real answer.

The cribs plastic hardware can break deform or simply be missing. In addition, the drop side can be installed upside down which can result in broken parts or parts that have become disengaged from the crib. All of these can cause the drop side to come detached on one or more of the corners. When a drop side detaches it creates a space between the drop side and the mattress which can be large enough for an infant to get trapped (see photo). Entrapment can lead to suffocation. Complete detachment can lead to the infant falling from the crib.

From the official CPSC Release:

This recall involves Stork Craft drop-side cribs and Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. This recall does not involve any cribs that do not have a drop-side. This recall does not involve any cribs with metal rod drop-side hardware. It involves only those cribs with plastic trigger and one-hand-system drop-side hardware.

This recall includes Stork Craft cribs with manufacturing and distribution dates between January 1993 and October 2009. This recall also includes Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo that have manufacturing dates between October 1997 and December 2004. The Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo were first sold in the U.S. in July 1998 and in Canada in September 1998. The cribs were sold in various styles and finishes. The manufacture date, model number, crib name, country of origin, and the firm’s name, address, and contact information are located on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board. The firm’s insignia “storkcraft baby” or “storkling” is inscribed on the drop-side teething rail of some cribs. In Stork Craft cribs that contain the “Fisher-Price” logo, this logo can be found on the crib’s teething rail, in the manufacturer’s instructions, on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board, and on the end panels of the Twinkle-Twinkle and Crystal crib models.

The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) issued a response to the recent safety concerns of drop side cribs on Monday. Click Here to read the full release. In the release they stress the importance of parents making sure they are properly following instructions and using cribs properly. I agree with them in that we should always stress this important factor but maybe more needs to be done.

In their response they talk about all cribs meeting a minimum standard. This minimum standard has been evolving for years but with almost 5 million cribs recalled in the past few years maybe this minimum is not high enough. The purpose of a standard is to improve the product not simply set a minimum benchmark. This year for example there are 2 provisions to the standard which are huge leaps forward - drop side cribs are banned from future production and a provision for increased slat strength in cribs.

As an organization representing our industry I feel they should be concerned about the validity of their certification process in light of this and other recalls. Their response appeared to be a cover your _ _ _ response instead of we need to do more and here is what should be done.
Drop side cribs have been disappearing from our floor for years. Many of the leading manufacturers had completely moved away from drop side cribs prior to this years ban on future drop side crib production. The drop side cribs have all been at the lower price points in the past couple years. You will always find cheap options of any product but when something as important as your baby’s safety is of concern make sure you spend the money to get the quality they deserve.

Product Recall ≠ Return: Maclaren Strollers to be recalled 11/10

When you hear the word recall in relation to a product purchased at a store, most people think the item needs to be returned immediately or something catastrophic will happen to them. This is not to say that isn't the case sometimes but more often than not in our industry, it means there is a simple, but important, fix that needs to take place.

Our vendors work very closely with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in ensuring these are announced publicly, managed so all affected products can be fixed and continue to meet compliance standards. I simply bring this up to urge you to read through any announcement thoroughly so if your product is affected it can be fixed as rapidly and efficiently as possible.

We always try to offer the latest information to our fans, followers and customers so they can stay on top of the latest information, issues and trends. That being said, on Tuesday, November 10th, Maclaren USA will be announcing a recall on ALL of their strollers manufactured since 1999. The issue involves the stroller's hinge mechanism, which poses a fingertip laceration and amputation hazard to the child when unfolding/opening the stroller.

Maclaren will be providing, free of charge, to all consumers who own an affected Maclaren single or double stroller a kit to cover the strollers hinge mechanism. The kit consists of two simple easy-to-fit covers that fit over the left and right hand hinges on the sides of the stroller. They will simply zip around the joint on the stroller frame. Retailers will be receiving kits to update existing inventory but most likely will not have extras. The quickest way to obtain the kit will be to order them through Maclaren either from their website www.maclaren.us/recall or by calling 877-688-2326. Both are currently not functioning but presumably will be on 11/10.

Remember, Maclaren strollers are safe! This is a voluntary recall and does not relate to a defect of their product. It is simply an alert to the owner/operator there is a possible risk of injury when opening/closing their strollers. Until you receive your hinge kit you should use extra care and be sure your children’s hands are clear of all mechanisms when folding and unfolding your stroller.

Can cloth diapers be easy & fashionable?

In a word; yes! A few months ago we started hearing about the buzz of a new cloth diapering option available. After a little research on gDiapers it was a no brainer, we had to have them. gDiapers are a whole new way to look at cloth diapers.

Conventional disposable diapers are the 3rd largest contributor to landfills and only about 5% of the population uses them. In addition, a single disposable diaper can take up to 500 years to biodegrade in a landfill. When you start to do the math of how many diapers that is per child, I get visions of towering piles of used diapers in our landfills about to topple over. Yuck!

The “g” in gDiapers stands for green diapers. gDiapers consist of a washable, cotton outer little gPant and a plastic-free biodegradable diaper gRefill. They are made of breathable material just like sports clothing. The result is a dry, happy baby who is less likely to get diaper rash. The best option is to flush the used gRefills. If you can’t, it’s ok to toss them because they're plastic-free. Better yet, garden compost the wet ones. They'll break down in 50-150 days.

The gPants come in 3 sizes: S - 8-14 lbs, M – 13-28 lbs. & L – 26-36 lbs. and are available in 4 different colored, 2 packs – green/aqua, orange/pink, orange/blue & vanilla/brown. It is good to keep around 4-6 available in your child’s size. These are reusable but accidents happen or they may simply get dirty like your kids clothes. You can use either the biodegradable gRefills or to be even more environmentally conscious gCloth inserts. I have read that many parents use the gRefills when they are out and about and gCloth when they are at home. The gRefills come in two sizes, Small (40 ct package) and Med/Lrg (32 ct package).

I am no longer in the diapering stage (thankfully) but g diapers would have made me think twice about using cloth diapers over disposable diapers. In case you are interested, gDiapers are Goore’s Twitter Tuesday promotion this week. Are you following us? We are @Goores – www.twitter.com/Goores.
