Consumer Safety Recall Information

Chicco USA, Inc., (Chicco), has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some of the bases for KeyFit and KeyFit 30 child restraint systems and Cortina Travel Systems manufactured between February 26, 2008 and March 17, 2008. This defect can prevent the base from being tightly secured to a vehicle when the lower LATCH attachments are used as the method of installation.

Specifically, when a defective base is installed with the lower LATCH attachment straps, the webbing used to tighten the base to the vehicle seat can slip through the adjustment lock. If the webbing were to slip during a vehicle crash, the base could move, possibly increasing the risk of injury.

Please Note: Your base can still be used safely when attached to the vehicle using the vehicle’s safety belts instead of the lower LATCH attachments.

What You Should Do

To determine whether you have one of the defective bases, please look at the Serial Number, which can be found on the third line of a white label attached to the base, as shown below. This Serial Number identifies the date your base was manufactured.

If the Serial Number is between 08 02 26 (corresponding to February 26, 2008) and 08 03 17 (corresponding to March 17, 2008), your base is covered by this recall. In that case, please:

  • Call 1-800-807-8817 to report the defective base.
  • Chicco will send a pre-paid envelope to you.
  • Cut the grey webbing that attaches the two black lower LATCH connectors, as shown below. This will assure that no one will be able to use your base with the LATCH attachments in the future.
  • Send the two LATCH connectors and your name, mailing address, and phone number in the pre-paid envelope to:

Chicco USA

Att: KeyFit Recall

1835 Freedom Road

Lancaster, PA 17601

  • We will send a replacement base to the address you indicated within two weeks after we receive the lower LATCH connectors.

IMPORTANT: Please remember that you can continue to use the base safely by installing it with the vehicle’s safety belts instead of the LATCH connectors.

For any questions about this recall, please call 1-800-807-8817 and have the serial number of your car seat base handy.
